"On Point"
MINSK, 9 October (BelTA) – Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov (2010-2014) explained the reasons for the degradation of politicians in EU countries in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
According to Nikolai Azarov, the process of political degradation in European countries began after the collapse of the Soviet Union. “Thirty-five years have passed since then. Initially, both the West and its deep state which holds real power required strong leaders to counter the enormous Soviet Union and various critical international situations. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union and simply over time, the need for such strong leaders disappeared. Why would the deep state need a Charles de Gaulle or someone like that today?” he said.
The expert is convinced that politicians of such a high level do exist in European countries today. “It cannot be a complete lack of talent and entirely unremarkable individuals. Undoubtedly, such people exist, but they are not allowed to advance,” he said.
“Today, individuals like Emmanuel Macron, lacking principles, personal convictions, and real authority, are pushed to the top. While assessments of Charles de Gaulle may vary, he remained a significant statesman with substantial experience and influence, who maintained self-respect and never permitted the undermining of his authority. So why would the deep states need such leaders now? To convince them, persuade them, plead with them? What for? It is much easier to give an order to Macron, Merz, or Starmer. Hence, the necessity for strong leaders has disappeared. It has simply vanished. It is much easier to deal with puppets. And this is the origin of the mediocrity, roughly speaking,” Nikolai Azarov stated.
