EU’s accusations of Belarus applying special regime for ‘political’ convicts slammed as unfounded

MINSK, 28 February (BelTA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejects the EU’s unfounded accusations of Belarus applying some kind of special prison regime for some individual Belarusian citizens, whose fate attracts special attention of Western political circles only because of their political leanings, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

"In Belarus, relevant penitentiary regime laws apply to all citizens serving time for criminal offences, without any discrimination, as in any EU country. All prisoners receive the necessary medical care and other assistance in the manner and to the extent determined by law," the ministry said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also noted that the EU's groundless public demands to release certain individuals convicted under the national criminal laws by a competent court on the basis of the political preferences of European governments and politicians raise doubts about Europe's true commitment to the rule of law.
