Daugavpils Chamber Orchestra to give concert in Vitebsk to celebrate Latvia Independence Day

VITEBSK, 25 November (BelTA) - Daugavpils Chamber Orchestra will give a concert in Vitebsk to celebrate the Independence Day of Latvia, BelTA learned from the culture center Vitebsk.

The orchestra will show the Vitebsk audience a concert program in the concert hall Vitebsk on 26 November. It is called “Dedication to Latvia” and was created specifically for the country's main holiday (marked on 18 November). The program features the pieces by Latvian composers (Janis Ivanovs, Imants Kalnins, Raimonds Pauls, and many others), and the music by the world-famous composers (Carlos Gardel, Vladimir Cosma, Nino Rota, Sting).

“Daugavpils Chamber Orchestra (conductor Ivar Broks) is distinguished by high performing skills, its own style and varied repertoire. The orchestra was set up in 2007. Before then Daugavpils had no its own orchestra,” the culture center reported.

On 26 November Vitebsk expects to host not only Latvian musicians but also representatives of Daugavpils City Council. Belarus' Vitebsk and Daugavpils of Latvia have long-standing friendship ties: a partnership agreement was signed in 1998. There is the Consulate of Latvia in the Belarusian regional center, thanks to which assistance the events dedicated to Latvia's Independence Day are held in Vitebsk every year.

This time Vitebsk is also hosting two Latvian exhibitions: the Marc Chagall Art Center is playing host to a joint exhibition “Cities of Peace” by Rector of the Latvian Academy of Arts Professor Alexei Naumov and Prorector Professor Kristaps Zarins. Works by Latvian artist, well-known illustrator of children's books Anita Paegle are on display in the Vitebsk regional library. The artist designed the Latvian commemorative 5 euro coins with the images of cats based on one of Latvia's most favorite fairytales Five Cats. The Bank of Latvia has recently started selling these coins in silver denomination.
