LOGOISK DISTRICT, 22 March (BelTA) - The genocide of the Belarusian people is one of the most horrifying chapters not only in the history of our country, but in the history of all mankind, Belarusian Prosecutor General Andrei Shved said at a ceremony in the Khatyn memorial complex to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the tragedy of the Belarusian village, BelTA learned.
“The genocide of the Belarusian people is one of the most horrifying chapters not only in our history but also in the history of all mankind. Based on the results of the investigation of the criminal case into the genocide of the Belarusian people, we conclude, based on the evidence, that no country in the world has known such massive extermination campaign as Belarus. As of today we have identified more than 400 death camps, or 587 to be exact, more than 180 major punitive operations; more than 12,300 communities were burned down completely or partially. This sad figure is, unfortunately, increasing every day as the investigation progresses further,” Andrei Shved said.
According to him, the investigation of the criminal case into the genocide of the Belarusian people is a national project, which affected everyone. “Not only state bodies, but all caring people. Because it's very important to remember and mourn every place of mass extermination of people. This is the priority of all our work,” the prosecutor general said. As for keeping the memory of the victims of genocide alive, we hold meetings and rallies all over the country, and it is very important that our youth is involved in these events. Only when our children and grandchildren tell future generations about the atrocities of fascists and their accomplices, then our joint work will bear fruit and then we will know we have done a good job. This is the reason why we are all exploring this terrible, horrifying chapter in the history of our Belarus.

“Today new facts of atrocities are being discovered. No less than 288 settlements shared the fate of Khatyn. Earlier we believed that it was 186 villages, today we have evidence that the figure is much higher. And it will, unfortunately, increase,” Andrei Shved added.
