Call on Belarusians to join Earth Hour on 27 March

MINSK, 26 March (BelTA) – Belarusians are encouraged to join the Earth Hour movement on 27 March and turn all lights off for one hour from 20:30 to 21:30, BelTA learned from the Energy Efficiency Department of the Belarusian State Committee for Standardization.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature. People are encouraged to turn off their lights and electric devices for an hour to show that they care about the planet's future. Famous buildings and monuments also go dark. In 2021, Belarus will join the movement for the 13th time. “The goal of the Earth Hour movement is not to save electricity, but to call attention to careful and responsible attitude to environment,” the department pointed out.

In 2020, Minsk turned off the decorative lights of the National Library, the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater, the Belarusian State Philharmonic, the National Art Museum, the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, the TSUM department store, the Stolitsa shopping mall and the Belarus Hotel.

“To join the largest environmental movement in the world, people should just turn their lights off from 20:30 to 21:30 on 27 March. It is an simple task, but this symbolic gesture demonstrates the willingness to help the planet by changing our everyday routine,” the department noted.
