Brest to take part in Global Mayors Challenge 2021

BREST, 9 February (BelTA) – Brest will take part in the urban innovations competition Global Mayors Challenge 2021 announced by former Mayor of New York City, politician and businessman Michael Bloomberg, Brest Mayor Aleksandr Rogachuk posted in his Telegram channel, BelTA has learned.

In January, the Brest City Hall received an invitation from Bloomberg Philanthropies to take part in the competition of innovative urban solutions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that have the ability to be replicated in other cities. The Brest city administration enthusiastically RSVPed, and on 8 February received an official response confirming Brest's participation in the global challenge.

“Brest is one of the cities that will develop and implement a project in response to the coronavirus pandemic and share their solutions with other cities in the future. It is a big honor for our city to be invited to take part in such a prestigious project. It will be a very valuable experience for us,” Aleksandr Rogachuk noted. He promised to keep his subscribers posted on details of Brest's participation in the competition.

The 2021 Global Mayors Challenge organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies is open to all cities with populations above 100,000. Brest was one of the first 500 cities to be invited to the competition. The participants will share their ideas and projects in such fields as education, social stability, budget savings, and the fight against climate change. These ideas can be in any stage of implementation, but must have the potential for meaningful impact, and the ability to spread to other cities.

The Global Mayors Challenge 2021 will give 50 champion cities access to world-renowned experts to help them improve upon their idea. Fifteen grand prize winners will then receive $1 million by the end of the year.
