Belarusian vice premier commemorates WWII medics

MINSK, 24 April (BelTA) - Many combat medics saved patients at the cost of their own lives, and we must remember their heroism and use these examples to foster patriots among the youth, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Karanik told the media on the sidelines of the IV Belarusian-Russian patriotic forum "To Live and Remember", which is taking place at the Belarusian State Medical University (BSMU), BelTA has learned.

"The Great Patriotic War demonstrated how medics protected their patients with weapons in hands. Many sacrificed their lives trying to save patients. We must remember their heroism. We need to foster patriotism among medics to make them understand the price paid for peace," Vladimir Karanik emphasized.

He stressed the importance of the fact that the forum is being held at BSMU and medical students are taking part in it.
"From my perspective, there is a misconception when people argue that medicine should be separated from politics," Vladimir Karanik noted. "A doctor must provide care to everyone in need, regardless of their religious, national and political background. During the Great Patriotic War, medical professionals treated wounded soldiers of both sides. However, this does not mean that a doctor should not be a patriot or love and defend their own country."

Vladimir Karanik stressed that future medical professionals need to understand how much the state invests in the healthcare system and how vital peace is for its development. "It is one thing to discuss approaches to advancing healthcare in peaceful conditions, under the peaceful sky. But we must not forget the circumstances in which combat medics worked during the Great Patriotic War. On the 80th anniversary of the Victory, we must bow to those who ensured the Victory of our people in that war, do our utmost to preserve peace and continue discussing ways to improve the healthcare system in peaceful conditions. At the same time, every doctor must be a patriot. This means loving your country, your history, and the achievements of your ancestors," the deputy prime minister remarked.

The forum is being held in Minsk on 24-25 April. Participating in the event are representatives from over 20 universities from Belarus and Russia.
