Belarusian telescope to be part of Belarusian-Russian remote Earth sensing satellite

MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – A Belarusian telescope will be incorporated into a Belarusian-Russian satellite for the remote sensing of Earth, BelTA learned from Sergei Zolotoi, Director of the Geoinformation Systems enterprise of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, during a press conference timed to World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day.

Sergei Zolotoi said: “Our remote Earth sensing industry has been developing for quite some time. The corresponding equipment was made even back in the Soviet times but once Belarus launched its own satellites, it started using this space data on a whole new level. If we talk about remote Earth sensing systems, there are two world trends. One is related to the creation of heavy spacecraft with a good resolution. We are making such a spacecraft together with Russia now. It is a so-called Belarusian-Russian satellite with the resolution of 0.35 meters. It is scheduled for launch in 2028.”

According to the Academy of Sciences representative, Russia will make the platform and will insert the satellite into orbit while the Belarusian enterprise Peleng will make a telescope. “It will be an optical device able to produce high-quality pictures from an altitude of 500km,” the official said.
