MINSK, 6 April (BelTA) – Setting up a group of friends in favor of peaceful and constructive development within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) could become a new vector of the parliamentary force in the course of reinforcing international mutual understanding. Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova came up with the initiative during general debates on the sidelines of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the press service of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament told BelTA.

The speaker expressed confidence that amid a crisis of international relations parliamentarians should become active defenders of social and economic human rights, should contribute to the development of justice and solidarity, preservation of peace and accord at the international level. “As architects of the social policy parliaments should actively pass laws geared towards protecting the rights of citizens, ensuring social equality, creating conditions for a decent quality of life, supporting vulnerable population strata, and promoting a sustainable development of the society,” Natalya Kochanova stressed. She remarked that people, their interests and needs have been, are, and will always be at the heart of Belarus’ state policy.

A truly sovereign and independent state has been built over the course of slightly more than three decades. Belarus has secured accomplishments that are and will be a source of pride for contemporary citizens and for future generations of Belarusians. “Today Belarus is a proud name for a country of great opportunities, the country to live in. And our nation is deeply grateful to its leader Aleksandr Lukashenko for the country’s policy. In parliamentary work we abide by the principle: laws should be fair, rooted in reality, and be adopted in the name of the people, in the name of every individual. Healthcare that anyone and everyone can access, education, and quality food are not just comforts. They are fundamental values, to which Belarusians have grown used to as inalienable parts of everyday life resulting from a persistent social policy. Our priorities remain unchanged,” the senator assured.

Belarus remains a peaceful country. Natalya Kochanova emphasized that in international contacts Belarusian MPs promote the ideas of good neighborhood, equitable and fair interstate cooperation. From this point of view, social development and justice, the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals require global cooperation. “Parliaments should actively cooperate with each other, share their experience and the best practices, create a network of unity and solidarity,” the speaker pointed out.

According to the chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, it is advisable to pool efforts for discussing and working out joint initiatives. “Setting up an informal association within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union – a group of friends of peaceful and constructive development – could become a new vector of the parliamentary force, of the parliamentary diplomacy in the course of reinforcing international mutual understanding. The reorientation of militarization funds towards the development of the social policy can greatly improve the quality of people’s life and bolster the stability of the society. Instead of investments in weapons and military infrastructure these resources should be channeled into key fields of the social sphere: education, healthcare, protection of maternity and childhood, state support for vulnerable population strata. Such an approach is capable of bringing together the international community around constructive goals and of ensuring long-term development, peace, and security of our countries,” the speaker concluded.
