Belarus, Qatar aim to develop investment cooperation, tourism

MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) - The Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus played host to a meeting with Chargé d'Affaires of Qatar to Belarus Hamoud Saleh Al-Saadi on 16 January, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Aleinik, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic, noted that today marks a very symbolic date in the history of bilateral relations between the countries. “A protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Belarus and Qatar was signed 30 years ago on 16 January 1996. Today, we devoted specific attention to this. It is a time to take stock of our cooperation. The results are quite positive. Over 30 years, we have managed to build very good, friendly, and trusting relations based on mutual respect. The Belarusian president has visited Qatar on official visits. There have also been reciprocal visits by the Emir of Qatar to Belarus. Cooperation has been established at the level of governments, ministries, and departments. A joint committee on bilateral cooperation has been set up as well,” said Sergei Aleinik.

Today, the parties discussed plans to convene the joint committee’s next session shortly, which will review a cooperation roadmap. “This roadmap covers many areas, most notably our trade, economic, and investment ties, social and humanitarian cooperation, and tourism development. We anticipate this document will be finalized and signed in the near future, injecting fresh momentum into harnessing the considerable potential between our nations,” the chairman of the commission said.

Sergei Aleinik added that the meeting considered issues of developing inter-parliamentary cooperation. “We have established contacts with the Parliament of Qatar. We have sent an official invitation to the speaker of Qatar’s legislative body to visit our country on an official visit. We hope such a visit may take place this year. We also discussed the need for interaction at the level of relevant commissions and committees to assist in implementing the tasks set at the intergovernmental level,” he said.

The Chargé d'Affaires of Qatar to Belarus paid special attention to the issue of tourism development. He shared his impressions of Belarus, noting a very high level of progress in the country, a high level of safety, and human development. He stated that he would do everything possible to promote the development of tourism cooperation between our countries.

“We also discussed cooperation in international organizations. Our views and approaches to resolving world conflicts exclusively through political and diplomatic means fully coincide. We also discussed issues of further developing the legal framework of our relations. Over 30 years, we have signed 15 bilateral intergovernmental documents covering many areas of cooperation. A series of agreements on youth policy, standardization, mutual legal aid, and international road haulage are currently under development,” Sergei Aleinik concluded.
