Belarus, Poland, United States to intensify trilateral cooperation in biodiversity conservation

MINSK, 10 August (BelTA) - Scientists from Belarus, Poland and the United States will intensify trilateral cooperation and joint activities in the field of biodiversity and conservation of unique natural areas. This decision was made following a meeting of a working group at the Institute for Mammal Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences on 7-9 August, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB).

The event brought together delegations of the NASB, the Polish Academy of Sciences and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine of the United States. The Belarusian delegation was headed by Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of National Academy of National Academies, Academician Aleksandr Kilchevsky. Researchers of the three countries discussed organizational issues, scientific activities and got acquainted with the objects of the Bialowieza National Park (Poland). The NASB delegation made a presentation of scientific activities, natural objects, infrastructure, and consevration activities in the Belarusian part of Belovezhskaya Pushcha.

During the previous meeting scientists discussed the organization and preparation for a major event - Conservation Genomics. Scheduled for the autumn of 2022, the international conference will be hosted by the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and by on Poland. The main goal of the forum is to apply the knowledge gained to preserve endangered species.

According to the press service, one of the major area of cooperation between the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Polish Academy of Sciences is Belovezhskaya Pushcha, which is the national asset of both the countries. The two states cooperate in the preservation of biodiversity, restoration of the hydrological regime of forest ecosystems, and other issues.

Conservation Genomics has been held every year and a half for more than two decades. Renowned scientists from around the world take part in the event. The conference participants study the methods, interpretation and application of molecular genetic analysis for the conservation of endangered species, and share experience in studying phenomena in this important field.
