MINSK, 10 September (BelTA) – The Belarusian town of Ostrovets and the Hungarian town of Paks have established sister city relations, with the agreement signed in Minsk on 10 September following a meeting of the Belarusian-Hungarian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation, BelTA has learned.
Both towns are united by the presence of nuclear power plants. Belarus’ own NPP was constructed and launched in 2020 with Russia’s support.
The nuclear power plant in the Hungarian town of Paks has been operational since 1983. It was built using Soviet technology and equipment. About a decade ago, the Hungarian authorities decided to construct several new power units in cooperation with Russia. However, the country spent a long time obtaining the necessary permits from the EU, and the actual construction of Paks II began only in 2022.
At the meeting of the Belarusian-Hungarian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation in Minsk, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó expressed Hungary’s interest in promoting economic cooperation with Belarus. In particular, he mentioned nuclear energy cooperation.
As a result of the meeting, a cooperation program between the foreign ministries of the two countries for 2026-2027 was also signed.
