Belarus named CIS leader in sustainable development

 
MINSK, 3 January (BelTA) - Belarus is the CIS leader in terms of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, reads the analytical report "National Sustainable Development Strategy 2035 in Figures" prepared by the Economy Research Institute at the Economy Ministry, BelTA has learned. 

Belarus’ main achievements in economy include continued macroeconomic balance, gradually restoring dynamics of economic growth and incomes of households, a stable level of employment and preventing the growth of unemployment.  

Despite the changes in the geo-economic situation, GDP rose by 3.8% in 2023. The debt burden on the economy has been gradually reducing. Gross external debt relative to GDP decreased from 68.7% in 2020 to 48.9% of GDP (as of 1 July 2023).

GDP per capita at purchasing power parity (PPP) increased from $20,300 in 2020 to $25,200 (estimated) in 2023.

Belarus has one of the lowest rates of poverty among the CIS countries. In 2022, it was at 3.9%. The target to reduce the level of poverty (to 4% in 2035) spelled in the National Sustainable Development Strategy 2035 has already been achieved. 

Belarus tanks in the group of countries with a high level of human development, ranking 60th among 191 countries in the human development index. Belarus is the CIS leader in terms of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Belarus ranks 34th among more than 160 countries.
