MINSK, 27 November (BelTA) – At the fourth session of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the eighth convocation, a statement was adopted calling for an end to the economic, trade, and financial embargo against the Republic of Cuba, BelTA has learned.

The statement reads: “The Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus welcomes the UN General Assembly’s resolution “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”. By this resolution, the overwhelming majority of UN member states, including the Republic of Belarus, have expressed their categorical rejection of unilateral coercive measures, which violate the fundamental principles and norms of international law.”

The document further states that Belarus consistently opposes the use of illegal sanctions, which Western countries employ as a tool for coercion and interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states. “Unlawful sanctions and their excessive application hinder the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, infringe upon fundamental human rights, and create preconditions for global crises and humanitarian disasters,” the statement emphasizes. “We join the urgent calls of international organizations for states to refrain from enacting any unilateral economic, financial, and trade measures. We express our solidarity with the Cuban people and reaffirm our commitment to deepening the friendship and cooperation, as well as political, economic, and humanitarian ties between our nations. We call for the lifting of the embargo against Cuba and for the international community to take effective steps to prohibit the use of unilateral coercive measures.”
