Belarus commemorates thousands of villages destroyed by Nazis during Great Patriotic War

GRODNO DISTRICT, 21 March (BelTA) - Knowledge of the history is what makes a nation great, Acting Governor of Grodno Oblast Yuri Karayev told the media before a commemorative meeting in the village of Partizanskaya, which suffered the fate of Khatyn in 1943, BelTA learned.

Belarus is commemorating the victims of the village of Khatyn that was burned down by the Nazis on 22 March 1943.

Belarusians also honor the memory of thousands of other villages destroyed by Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War. One of them was the village Partizanskaya (Puzovichi) where the commemorative event was held on 21 March.

“People tend to forget bad things. It is natural. Years pass, and witnesses to those terrible events pass away. Only such events as today’s, only monuments and history teachers remind us and tell us about the years gone by. Thus we pass on this continuity, thus the memory of the people lives on,” Yuri Karayev said.

The acting governor added: “Knowledge of the history is what makes a nation great. British and Italians are proud of their great achievements and victories. Our history is no less great, no less significant and no less tragic. That is why our people, schoolchildren, students, young people should know it well. This is the self-consciousness, self-perception, self-identification of the people”.

“The genocide, the destruction of the Belarusian people is our pain, our tragedy. The Nazi occupants conquered our territory, destroyed our population, pursued a policy of terror against them, not even a campaign, but a multi-year policy to destroy the people. The people heroically resisted, fought back and waited for the Red Army in order to live on their land, to develop as the nation, and not to be servant,” Yuri Karayev said.

He emphasized that the events timed to the anniversary of the Khatyn tragedy are designed to reach out to people, revive the memory and point out the need to preserve and pass it on.
