MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) – The efforts of Aleksandr Lukashenko to promote regional development will eliminate disparity in living conditions across Belarus and might lead to a situation when a small settlement will have a better living environment than the capital city, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
Nikolai Azarov commented on the key messages put forward by Aleksandr Lukashenko in his inauguration speech with a focus on regional development. “The president of Belarus said that Minsk should not be the only place with good living conditions. Every city, town and village should have the same conditions as the capital city. This is a very important and very big task,” he emphasized.
The former prime minister of Ukraine remarked that this matter is neglected in many countries. “Some kind of single-industry towns, single-industry hubs are being created and they soak up absolutely all resources. It's a Potemkin village. I have always been against such a policy. On the contrary, I distributed money away from Kiev, the city that accumulated all the resources, that headquartered absolutely all large companies, corporations. And its budget was many times bigger than that of any other city. Therefore, I did not hesitate to tap into it. I thought: why should things be very good in Kiev and five times worse, for example, in Poltava or Dnepropetrovsk ?” he said.
Nikolai Azarov was also impressed by the Belarusian leader's concern for his country and his determination to make top-notch health services available and affordable to residents of all regions. “And it will lead to the situation when any settlement in Belarus will offer an equally good living experience. And maybe a small settlement will have a better living environment than the capital city,” Nikolai Azarov noted.
