MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – In the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel, former Prime Minister of Ukraine (2010-2014) Nikolai Azarov said that NATO should not be a priority for Ukraine.

“We have already witnessed four years of Trump's presidency. We saw him at the negotiations with the prime minister of Denmark, with Canada, with Mexico. At first he puts pressure, this is his modus operandi, he is a businessman and he sticks to the negotiating principle: always ask for more than you expect to get,” Nikolai Azarov said.

“This is a typical way of thinking of a billionaire or businessman. At first you overask and then gradually retreat to some point where you drew a line in the sand and at this point an agreement is possible,” the politician noted.

According to him, if Trump signs off on Ukraine's NATO membership, then four years later someone might say that Trump's approval was not legit. And this rigamarole will start all over again,” Nikolai Azarov said.

“This process will not begin again only if Ukraine gets a government that cares about the country's national interests, that understands that NATO is not a priority for the country. The priority is development and and development needs neutrality. When neutrality comes from within, and the country does not depend on any loans, handouts, and so on, we can expect lasting peace,” the politician said.
