Political reasons behind recent potato shortage in Belarus

MINSK, 10 June (BelTA) – During a government conference held on 10 June to discuss matters concerning the development of the national movie industry Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made a few comments about a recent shortage of potatoes in the country, BelTA has learned. It turned out that the situation had been artificially created.

“You have to be reasonable and balanced Belarusians. Earthly and forward-looking people. You shouldn’t wail all the time that we don’t have enough potatoes or something else. We have plenty of everything,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

When the State Control Committee looked into actions of certain individuals, it turned out that politics had been a factor. “There were plenty of potatoes. But the supply was limited in order to demonstrate the adverse effects of the president interfering with pricing practices. But when [the State Control Committee] showed up with handcuffs and placed them on the table, potatoes became available,” the Belarusian leader stated.
