MINSK, 6 November (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for the construction of a new world-class swimming pool in Minsk on 6 November, BelTA has learned.
"I talked to my friend [Chinese President Xi Jinping]. Thanks to Xi Jinping, a great friend of the Belarusian people, we have built this facility. But it is not the only one. In the near future you will see another amazing facility in Minsk, probably a more significant one, but for football players," the president said alluding to the football stadium, which is also being built by China.
Aleksandr Lukashenko recalled when the Chinese leader showed a model of the future swimming pool during a visit of the Belarusian head of state to China. "He took me by the hand saying: 'Come on, I'll show you something'. We came and saw a stand. He takes a blanket off and said: 'This national football stadium and swimming pool will be built in Minsk'. China's discipline is very strict. If Xi Jinping says something, no one discusses it, they do it," the president noted.
He pointed out that the Chinese side had invested significant financial resources in the construction of both facilities: "You need to understand: it is a large amount of money. China has injected significant funds. This is free technical assistance."
Moreover, China is ready to provide technical assistance to build several more social facilities in the future. "They are willing to help us build more significant social facilities for free," Aleksandr Lukashenko said. "We are very grateful to Xi Jinping and the great Chinese people. Thank them very much."
BelTA reported earlier, the swimming pool in Minsk is one of the projects within the framework of humanitarian cooperation between Belarus and China. The construction started in August 2020. China designed and built the swimming pool on a turnkey basis in accordance with the technical requirements and standards of the People's Republic of China and with the technical requirements and criteria of the World Aquatics. According to the World Aquatics requirements, the facility's category is AC-5 (World and European Aquatics Championships).
The facility is expected to be used as a modern center to train national teams of Belarus, hold national competitions in aquatic sports, provide services to the general public, and host competitions of a high international level. It provides favorable conditions for training activities, nutrition, rest and recovery of athletes, scientific and methodological support.
The president thanked the Chinese specialists and builders, who worked in Minsk. "You are just great! It was not easy for you to build this facility, because the pandemic interfered in our life very strongly at the time. The Chinese took it very seriously in their home country. We did, too. Therefore, there were some difficulties, but we went on. Slowly, but we kept moving," Aleksandr Lukashenko said. "Last year, I asked China to finish the construction before this holiday. I made a number of decisions to ensure that it would be done. China made a promise and kept it. That is discipline. That is an example to us: said and done."
