MINSK, 9 August (BelTA) – There were a number of surprises, disappointments, and reasons for joy in 2020. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during a meeting with representatives of the general public, experts, and mass media titled as the Big Conversation with the President on 9 August, BelTA has learned.
Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “I was glad that they had failed to achieve anything. I cannot say there were traitors everywhere but there were mad and crazy people. I think there are a handful of them left.”
Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned his visit to the Bolshoi Theater and his conversation with the actors, some of whom expressed disagreement with the current government but keep working now.
Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed: “I rejoice most of all thanks to the fact that people have sorted out things at last. I am glad there were not many traitors in defense, security, and law enforcement bodies, in government agencies, and so on. I understand that some keep quiet even now. But we will get to them. I honestly and openly stated: no traitors will work in a government body.” At the same time those, who think differently and want good things to happen to Belarus, will enjoy an open road, their voice will be heard, the head of state assured.
He said: “I am glad that everything has ended like that. You know many say it was a good thing that things happened the way they did. It was a good revision of our society. We saw what was really going on and the worth of some people.”
Aleksandr Lukashenko continued: “But it doesn't mean we will regret things or assault someone and look for the guilty parties and so on. We are not going to do that. People need to recognize it on their own. Because innocents will suffer if we start breaking down everything. We may harm a large group of people, who think neutral thoughts or are our supporters. But we will enforce tough measures where we find treachery and the things that accompany treachery.”
Speaking about last year's disappointments, Aleksandr Lukashenko noted: “I have already forgotten the things I don't need. And I cannot say what disappointed me. Government bodies might have been more active and more independent without waiting for instructions. Because I had to sit every day and manage certain things just like defense, security, and law enforcement agencies had to. People need to do such things on their own.”
