Lukashenko: I do not care whether West recognizes Belarus’ election or not

MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) – I do not care whether the West recognizes the election in Belarus or not, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told the media after he cast his vote in the presidential election in Belarus on 26 January, BelTA has learned.

“It is up to you in the European Union to recognize this election or not. Believe me, I don't care whether you recognize our election or not. The most important thing for me is for Belarusians to recognize this election, and to have them proceed as calm as they started. That is the main thing. The rest is up to you. If you recognize it, we will respond and thank you. If you do not recognize it, well, what can we do if you have already decided not to recognize it? If tomorrow the USA makes a statement or keeps silent at least about our election, what will you do then?” Aleksandr Lukashenko said answering the question of the BBC journalist.

“If I made a statement that I do not recognize the U.S. election and do not recognize Trump, would anything in the USA change? Or the UK, for example: I do not recognize [UK Prime Minister Keir] Starmer, and what? Will anything happen in the UK then? Nothing. The same way nothing will happen in our country,” the Belarusian leader said.

“We will know the result in the evening. Everything depends on the Belarusian people. It is such a period,” the head of state added.
