Lukashenko gives instructions to develop cryptocurrency mining in Belarus

MINSK, 4 March (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has given instructions to develop cryptocurrency mining in the country. The instructions were given as the president addressed the newly appointed Energy Minister Aleksei Kushnarenko, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “Take a look into [cryptocurrency] mining. If it is profitable for us, let’s do it. We have excessive electricity. They are free to make this cryptocurrency and so on. Moreover, you can see what path the world is moving along. And particularly the world’s largest economy. They declared yesterday that they will keep [a cryptocurrency] in reserve.”

“This is why there will be demand for them. Well, we should probably do it ourselves. We invite some investors. We sell electricity to them although I don’t rule it out. But we should do it on our own. The relevant proposals are available. I think that you will get over this red tape and will report what we should do,” the president added.
