Lukashenko: Belarus is able to consume all nuclear energy made by BelNPP

MINSK, 3 June (BelTA) – Belarus is capable of consuming all electric energy generated by the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) provided the country pursues a smart nuclear energy policy, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Nazarov, Belarus President's Aide Aleksandr Kosinets and Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich, BelTA has learned.

“I want to ask you to keep calm and not to fret about what to do with extra energy and where to sell it. If we act in a smart way, we will use it up and even need more. This is a super clean source of energy, it is needed everywhere: from housing to manufacturing and for the nuclear power plant itself,” the president noted.

In this regard, Aleksandr Lukashenko asked the attendees about possible applications of nuclear energy in the country and what is planned to be done to increase electric energy consumption. “We will build a second nuclear power plant, if needed. It is also a possibility. The West, especially our neighbors, criticized us for it all the time citing security reasons, while they themselves planned the construction of nuclear power plants. Previously, Lithuania could barely articulate it, while now it is already considering such a project, or perhaps re-commissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. Poland plans to build such a plant too, other countries are either building or have already built them. Nuclear energy is the energy of the future. Thank God, we started dealing with this matter in due time. This is the perspective, the latest in technology,” the president said.
