MINSK, 10 March (BelTA) – Washington is considering various options for changing Cuba’s status, including establishing US control over the island, US President Donald Trump said at a news conference in Doral, Florida, responding to a question about a possible deal with Havana, TASS reported.
“It may be a friendly takeover. It may not be a friendly takeover. It wouldn’t matter because they’re down to, as they say, fumes. They have no energy. They have no money. They’re in deep trouble on a humanitarian basis, and we don't want to see that,” Donald Trump said.
According to the US leader, the difficult situation on the island makes reaching an agreement inevitable. Donald Trump believes that either the Cuban authorities will agree to a deal or the United States will carry out a change of government.
Earlier, on 5 March, Donald Trump announced that Washington plans to develop a further strategy toward Cuba after its military operation against Iran is completed. He has repeatedly emphasized that Cuba’s government and economy are close to collapse after oil supplies from Venezuela to the island were halted under US pressure.
