Putin warns against destabilizing CSTO region

MINSK, 10 January (BelTA) – The reaction of the CSTO countries to the events in Kazakhstan has clearly shown that no one will be allowed to destabilize the situation in the region and to implement the scenario of color revolutions, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a special session of the CSTO Collective Security Council on 10 January, BelTA has learned.

The Russian leader stressed the importance of today's CSTO session and drew attention to the relevance of the topic for all CSTO countries: "This applies to all of us, I absolutely agree with Aleksandr Lukashenko in this regard."

"We know that the events in Kazakhstan are not the first or the last attempt at external interference in the internal affairs of our states. I agree here with Aleksandr Grigoryevich [Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko]. The measures taken by the CSTO have clearly shown that we will not allow destabilizing the situation at home and will not allow implementing the scenarios of the so-called color revolutions," the Russian president said.

According to him, internet and social networks are used to involve citizens in protests, which are a precursor to terrorist attacks. The chronology of events in Kazakhstan showed this quite clearly. “Moreover, certain forces do not shy away from using cyberspace and social networks to recruit extremists and terrorists and create sleeper cells of militants. In this regard, I believe it is appropriate to instruct the Committee of Secretaries of the CSTO Security Council to work out proposals, as part of the working groups on information security and on combating terrorist and extremism, on joint measures to counteract attempts at destructive external interference in the CSTO area of responsibility,” Vladimir Putin said.

“The main thing is that the tragic events that our brotherly country, Kazakhstan, is experiencing today do not take us by surprise and that we are fully mobilized and ready to respond to any provocations,” the Russian leader stressed.
