Putin: Russia needs lasting peace

MINSK, 1 August (BelTA) - Russia needs a lasting and durable peace, Russian President Vladimir Putin said as he took questions from journalists during a meeting with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on Valaam Island, BelTA learned.

"Just recently, our adversaries and ill-wishers spoke of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia on the battlefield. Yet today, they have but one burning obsession: to halt our advance at any cost," the Russian leader emphasized.

The Russian president further noted that their current objective is to address re-equipment and rearmament of the Ukrainian army. Something that Russia cannot allow to happen.

"Let me reiterate: we need a lasting and durable peace built on solid foundations that would satisfy both Russia and Ukraine while ensuring the security of both countries. Perhaps those Ukrainian negotiators who cautiously raised the notion of discussing European security were correct in their approach," Vladimir Putin stated.
