Putin recalls courage of Belarus’ defenders at parade on Red Square

MOSCOW, 9 May (BelTA) - Russian President Vladimir Putin recalled the courage of the defenders of Belarus as he delivered a speech at the parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War on Red Square in Moscow, BelTA learned.

The Soviet Union bore the brunt of the most terrible, merciless blows of the enemy. Millions of people, who knew only peaceful labor, took up arms and stood to the death on all heights, bridgeheads and frontiers, determined the outcome of the entire Second World War by unconditional victories in the major battles of Moscow and Stalingrad, on the Kursk Bulge and the Dnieper, by the courage of the defenders of Belarus, who were the first to face the enemy, the fortitude of the defenders of the Brest Fortress and Mogilev, Tula, Smolensk, the heroism of residents of besieged Leningrad, the bravery of all those who fought at the front, in partisan units and in the underground, the valor of those who evacuated factories under enemy fire, who worked in the rear, without sparing themselves, at the limit of their strength. The heroism of the people was massive,” Vladimir Putin said.

He noted that all USSR republics bore the common heavy burden of the war. The contribution of Central Asia and the South Caucasus was huge. They uninterruptedly sent echelons with everything the front needed and housed hospitals. Hundreds of thousands of evacuated people found their second home there. “We honor every veteran of the Great Patriotic War. We bow our heads before the memory of all those who gave their lives for the Victory,” the Russian president.

The Russian leader recalled that almost 80% of the world's population was drawn into the fiery orbit of World War II. “The complete defeat of Nazi Germany, militaristic Japan and their satellites in different regions of the world was achieved by the joint efforts of the countries of the united nations. We will always remember that the opening of the second front in Europe after decisive battles on the territory of the Soviet Union brought Victory closer. We highly appreciate the contribution to our common struggle of soldiers of the allied armies, resistance fighters, the courageous people of China, all those who fought for a peaceful future,” Vladimir Putin emphasized.

“We will continue to take an example from the veterans, their sincere love for the Motherland, their determination to defend the fatherland, humanism and justice,” the Russian president said.
