Peskov: Abnormal rise in votes for Sandu, Eurointegration in Moldovan election, referendum

MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) - The Kremlin has noted an abnormal rise in votes for Moldova’s incumbent President Maia Sandu and Eurointegration in the election and referendum, spokesman for the Russian president Dmitry Peskov told the media, TASS reports.

"The figures that we see today, the ones we are monitoring, the dynamics of their changes, certainly raise many issues," the Kremlin official said.
"What we are seeing is a mechanical, hard to explain increase in votes for Sandu and Eurointegration," Dmitry Peskov noted. According to him, "any observer, more or less familiar with the essence of political processes, can register these voting abnormalities."

The Kremlin spokesman also said that Sandu, who claims that some "criminal groups" allegedly undermined “a democratic process”, must provide evidence. "Firstly, it is not said what it is about. Secondly, these are quite serious accusations towards these ‘criminal groups’, and some evidence must be presented to the public," he said while commenting on Sandu's accusations.

"It would be also good for Mrs Sandu to explain so many votes that disagree with her policies. Are these also ‘criminal groups’? Or does she mean that Moldovan citizens who do not support her are associated with ‘criminal groups’," Dmitry Peskov continued.

He stressed that even in the context of this unfree election campaign, it is obvious that many people do not support the incumbent president. "This is noteworthy," the Kremlin spokesman emphasized. Dmitry Peskov explained what the unfree election campaign in Moldova was all about. "Opposition forces were deprived of a chance to engage in any kind of campaigning, to engage in the electoral process. They were persecuted. They were jailed. They were interrogated. They were not allowed into the country. Their media were muzzled. And their Internet resources were blocked," Peskov said. The Kremlin official suggested waiting for final election results.

The presidential election was held in Moldova on 20 October. On the same day, the country held a referendum on the EU integration. According to the CEC, after processing almost 99% of the protocols, the incumbent Maia Sandu received 42.07% of the votes, former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, who criticizes Sandu for the policy of confrontation with the Russian Federation, gained 26.27%. The leader of Our Party Renato Usatîi rounded up the top three with 13.72% of the vote. Since none of the candidates received more than 50% of the vote, the second round will be held on 3 November.

After processing 98.6% of the referendum protocols, Moldova's accession to the European Union was supported by 50.27% of voters, 49.73% were against. It is noteworthy that on the evening of 20 October, the CEC of Moldova, after processing 30% of the protocols, stated that 56% of the country's citizens voted against the country's accession to the EU, and 43% were in favor. On the morning of 21 October, the commission reported a slight advantage in favor of those who voted for European integration.
