Opinion: It is important to prevent violent extremism in Belarus

MINSK, 13 October (BelTA) - Now it is important to localize radicals and prevent the growth of extremist manifestations in Belarus, researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, political analyst Aleksei Dzermant wrote in his Telegram channel, BelTA has learned.

“Aggressive elements from youth subcultures again took to the streets last night under the guise of a march of pensioners in Minsk. The expectation was to repeat the events of 9-12 August. Law enforcers prevented this. Lukashenko's unexpected visit to the KGB jail and smiling Babariko, a change of preventive measure for those who are ready for constructive interaction with the authorities clearly confused the irreconcilable part of the opposition and their foreign patrons. Tikhanovsky asked his wife to act harder. The authorities also heard him. There is a split in the opposition into radicals and those who are not,” the analyst said.

In his opinion, the head of state has recently made several extraordinary moves. “By appearing with a weapon in his hands together with his son, he showed that in case of danger he would not hide and that he stands shoulder to shoulder with the security forces protecting the people from chaos; by inauguration he confused the plans of the opposition and did not allow this event to be used for the escalation of the situation; by communicating with the arrested opposition leaders, he showed the readiness for dialogue and compromise with his opponents. In other words, Lukashenko holds the initiative, retains full control over the situation in the country and demonstrates his strong political will. Now it is important to localize radicals and prevent the growth of extremist manifestations. We have enough forces for that,” Aleksei Dzermant said.
