Lukashevich: Belarus strengthened its involvement in SCO activities

MINSK, 21 August (BelTA) - Belarus has significantly strengthened its involvement in activities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Belarus’ First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lukashevich said in an interview with BelTA.
“Belarus’ activity within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has historic significance: virtually everything we undertake within its framework is being done for the first time in history,” Sergei Lukashevich emphasized. “Over the past year, Belarus has significantly increased its presence in all areas of SCO activity and actively engaged in its work without delay. For example, we have participated in 25 meetings of ministers and heads of agencies and in 26 events at the working group level. Notably, on 5 June 2025, Belarusbank was admitted into the ranks of banks participating in the SCO Interbank Consortium. In May this year, six Belarusian universities joined the activities of the SCO University.”

Sergei Lukashevich stressed: “We have seen that within the SCO framework Belarus can implement its strategic priorities, promote the development of multifaceted cooperation, and contribute to joint projects.”

The Belarusian side is confident that the SCO summit will result in decisions that will strengthen the SCO’s institutional capacity, above all, in the area of joint efforts to combat cross-border challenges such as terrorism, cyberthreats, and drug trafficking. “In the economic sphere, we expect to advance initiatives to simplify customs procedures, encourage mutual investment, develop the digital economy and transport connectivity, and support green energy. We are also ready to work on expanding humanitarian exchanges. All these areas are extremely important for the Republic of Belarus,” he said.

The SCO summit will be held in Tianjin, China on 31 August-1 September. Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko will take part in it at the invitation of President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping.
