MINSK, 6 May (BelTA) – President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau has arrived in Belarus on a visit. The plane of the African head of state has landed in Minsk National Airport, BelTA has learned.

Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Evgeny Shestakov welcomed Umaro Sissoco Embaló in the airport.

As BelTA reported earlier, the presidents of Belarus and Guinea-Bissau held phone talks in March. Umaro Sissoco Embaló phoned the Belarusian head of state to discuss issues of bilateral cooperation.

“The parties had a thorough talk on the whole range of bilateral relations and areas in which the parties are interested in developing interaction. Aleksandr Lukashenko and Umaro Sissoco Embaló also discussed the details of the planned visit of the leader of Guinea-Bissau to Belarus,” the press service of the Belarusian leader said.

In November 2024, the heads of state held a brief meeting on the sidelines of the World Climate Summit in Baku.

Umaro Sissoco Embaló will be on a visit to Belarus on 6-8 May 6. According to news agencies, he will then go to Moscow to attend the events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. As is known, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko will also attend the parade on Red Square in Moscow on 9 May.

Guinea-Bissau is a small state on the west coast of Africa, bordering Senegal and Guinea. It is a former colonial possession of Portugal. The country proclaimed independence on 24 September 1973.

The Soviet Union helped Guinea-Bissau to develop a fishing fleet and build fish processing plants. With the assistance of the USSR, several diesel power plants were built. Soviet doctors, geologists, military specialists worked in the country, and Bissau students studied in Soviet universities.

Current President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has been called the representative of a new generation of leaders in Africa. He served as Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau from 2016-2018, and during his tenure, he contributed to the country’s higher GDP, growing economy, and reduced inflation.
