MINSK, 29 October (BelTA) - Lithuania's move to embargo Kaliningrad transit will be a declaration of war on Russia, Armando Mema, a member of the Finnish national-conservative Freedom Alliance, said in his post on the social network X .
“Lithuania MFA Kestutis has called for an embargo for transits to Kaliningrad. This is a very dangerous move for a small country like Lithuania,” the politician said.
He added: “I doubt the EU will ever allow this to happen as it would be a declaration of war against Russia.”
Meanwhile, according to RIA Novosti, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Russia will make ensure the needs of Kaliningrad Oblast are met under any circumstances. She also indicated that Moscow expects Lithuania will not take provocative steps regarding transit to Kaliningrad Oblast.
“We expect that the Lithuanian side will nevertheless refrain from such a provocative step. We will also closely monitor the situation regarding Vilnius's unjustified decision to indefinitely close the two remaining road border checkpoints on the border with Belarus,” Maria Zakharova said.
“If this statement [by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budris] is true, then, firstly, we would like to remind Mr. Budris of Lithuania's obligations to ensure unimpeded transit to/from Kaliningrad Oblast , including those arising from the 2002 and 2004 EU-Russia joint statements. Secondly, no one should have any doubt that the Russian Federation will, under all circumstances and in any conditions, ensure the needs of its westernmost region,” the commentary from the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budris previously stated that Vilnius reserves the right to block Kaliningrad transit in the interests of security. “Completely cutting off transit is not out of the question,” the minister noted. On 26 October, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda proposed restricting transit to Kaliningrad and closing the border with Belarus for an extended period.
