CSTO PA Council urges to stop catastrophic developments in Middle East

MOSCOW, 9 December (BelTA) - The Council of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization adopted a statement on the situation in the Middle East at a meeting in Moscow on 9 December. The Belarusian parliamentary delegation headed by Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko took part in the event, BelTA learned.

The CSTO PA Council expressed concern about the unprecedented level of confrontation in the occupied Palestinian territory and the Lebanese-Israeli border area. “The Middle East has once again found itself on the brink of a major regional war. We believe that the ongoing bloodshed in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone for more than a year requires a decisive and consolidated response from the international community,” the statement said.

The CSTO PA Council noted that the unresolved Palestinian-Israeli conflict has a destabilizing effect on the entire region. “The violent and devastating crisis over the Gaza Strip has become a catalyst for a sharp escalation of the Lebanese-Israeli confrontation. We call on members of the international community to halt the catastrophic development of events and make active diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation, and to responsibly consider the implementation of the relevant resolutions adopted by the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations,” the document emphasizes.

The CSTO PA Council drew attention to the need to achieve a just and long-term settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and to realize the right of the Palestinians to establish their own independent state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

“With regard to Lebanon, we see the faithful implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) as the key to the normalization of the situation. We express our full support for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, which plays a stabilizing role in the Blue Line area. We support international efforts aimed at preventing further expansion of the confrontation,” the statement said.
