MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) - Sergei Aleinik, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic, met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus Zhang Wenchuan on 6 February, BelTA has learned.
Sergei Aleinik extended greetings to the Chinese ambassador on the occasion of the upcoming Chinese New Year - the Spring Festival.
The meeting focused on the further development of all-weather and comprehensive strategic cooperation between Belarus and China across various sectors, including interparliamentary ties. The parties positively assessed Belarusian-Chinese interaction over the past year, which was marked by an active bilateral agenda at all levels.
The chairman of the Standing Commission of the Council of the Republic highlighted the significance of the two visits made by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to China in 2025, which contributed to the further deepening of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Sergei Aleinik also noted the successful implementation of joint projects within the framework of China’s Belt and Road initiative, in which Belarus is an active participant. He emphasized that by the end of 2025, the countries had reached a new historical high in mutual trade. The chairman of the Standing Commission believes that holding the Years of Industrial Cooperation between Belarus and China in 2026-2027 will contribute to an even greater intensification of bilateral contacts.
The parties acknowledged the significance of interparliamentary ties as a key component of the comprehensive Belarus-China partnership. Notably, the Chinese embassy in Belarus included the second meeting of the Committee for Cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries, co-chaired by Natalya Kochanova, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, and Zhang Qingwei, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, among the top 10 most significant events in bilateral cooperation for 2025.
Sergei Aleinik and Zhang Wenchuan confirmed their readiness to continue advancing interparliamentary cooperation. The topic of interregional ties between Belarus and China was also discussed during the meeting. Each region of Belarus and the city of Minsk have three or more sister regions, ensuring coverage of practically all Chinese provinces. Agreements have been signed to establish and develop cooperation at the “city-to-city” level between regional centers and cities of Belarus and administrative centers and centrally-administered municipalities of China, creating a systemic and direct framework for interaction. Annual roadmaps are also established to guide interregional collaboration, covering trade, economics, agriculture, tech innovation, and social sectors.
“I hope that in the foreseeable future we will be able to move towards holding a forum of the regions of Belarus and China. There is a solid treaty-legal framework for interregional cooperation, comprising over 100 documents and a mutual desire to expand contacts between regions,” Sergei Aleinik said.
The Chinese ambassador highly appreciated the results of the two countries’ cooperation over the past year across all sectors. Zhang Weichuan emphasized that the Embassy of China would continue to make every necessary effort to promote interparliamentary interaction, as well as contacts between ministries, departments, and business communities.
