Belarusian FM: Europe's democracy is in crisis

MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) – We see the true crisis of democracy in Europe itself as it violates all basic human values, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov said as he addressed the high-level panel discussion of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on 24 February, BelTA has learned.

“Why do people take to the streets in the world today?” the minister asked. “We, in Belarus, watch news reports about this on BBC, CNN, Euronews. It is when people face common life problems. The so-called collective West is facing civil disobedience, protests. We all see it. Protestors are not interested in media freedom or any political rights."

Maksim Ryzhenkov continued: “Peace and security, jobs and wages, pensions and social guarantees… These are the main triggers that bring millions of people in Europe to the streets today. Those millions, who have long been disappointed in the ability to solve their problems through elections. We can see this in the number of people participating.”

He asked a question: “Can the situation with freedoms and media rights in the Old World be recognized as exemplary in general? I agree with the recent statement that Europe's democracy is in crisis as Europe violates all basic human values. The White House is realizing this too. Most of us (and I have heard it in the speeches before me) realize that human rights issues have taken the wrong turn, becoming increasingly controversial and divisive.”

“We will soon all forget the civilizational path of development of these very rights,” the minister remarked.
