Belarus, Arab League plan to expand cooperation

MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – A Belarusian delegation led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yevgeny Shestakov was in Egypt on a working trip on 14-15 February, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.

Another round of political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt was held in Cairo. The parties thrashed out plans to intensify Belarus-Egypt cooperation, discussed promising avenues of interaction in politics, trade, economy, tourism and humanitarian matters, and reviewed the regional agenda.

The diplomats examined the possibilities of elaborating the legal framework for bilateral relations and highlighted active interaction between Belarus and Egypt in international organizations.

During the working trip, Yevgeny Shestakov met with Assistant Secretary General, Head of the International Political Sector of the League of Arab States Dr. Khalid bin Mohamed Manzalawi to discuss efforts to step up interaction. The diplomats also compared notes on the current issues in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

“The interlocutors emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation between Belarus and Arab countries, especially in food security. During the meeting, a message from Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Aleinik to Secretary General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit was conveyed,” the press service said.

The deputy foreign minister also met with representatives of the Egyptian business community to discuss mechanisms to invigorate trade and economic cooperation between Belarus and Egypt.
