Ambrazevich: Belarus is interested in closer cooperation with Vatican

MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) – Belarus seeks to strengthen ties with Vatican, Yuri Ambrazevich told journalists after being appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the Holy See on 27 March, BelTA has learned.

Yuri Ambrazevich emphasized: “Belarus' foreign policy is exclusively peaceful and its key goal is to make friends and use these partnerships to promote national interests, including in foreign trade and foreign investment. In this context, Vatican and the Pope personally have enormous authority in the world and significant influence on society and the elites of a number of states where the Catholic religion has traditionally had a serious impact on the mentality, the worldview and values of people. These values are aligned with the values of Belarusian society.”

“We proceed from the fact that hundreds of millions of people in the world identify themselves as Catholics. An even greater number of people listen to what Vatican and the Pope say. And these people are guided by the values that we also share, like family values and other Christian values,” the ambassador noted.

He went on saying: “Belarus upgraded its diplomatic presence in Vatican [with the creation of the Belarusian embassy] with a view to strengthening its positions in Latin America, Africa. This move is also expected to give us more tools to reach out to public elites, state elites of countries of Europe and North America because we believe that the Catholic religion can have an impact on their decision-making.”
