TEHRAN, 17 September (BelTA - IRNA) - Iran’s National Freestyle
Wrestling Team has claimed the championship title at the 2025 World
Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, marking its first triumph in
12 years.
The decisive moment came on Monday night when Amirhossein Firouzpour secured a bronze medal in the 92kg category. The freestyle wrestler from Iran’s northern province of Mazandaran defeated Kazakhstan’s Kamil Kurugliev 4-0, sealing Iran’s overall victory. Firouzpour already defeated Batyrbek Tsakulov of Slovakia 7-2 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.
Firouzpour’s bronze was the team’s seventh medal in Zagreb, following one gold, three silvers, and two other bronzes. This latest achievement marks Iran’s sixth world title since the country’s first championship win in 1961. The 2025 championships run from September 13-21.
President Masoud Pezeshkian congratulated the national team, praising the victory as a source of pride and joy for the Iranian nation. In his message on Monday night, he highlighted the wrestlers’ tireless efforts, saying the win proved that the sons and daughters of this land, as always, “are capable of raising the proud flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the toughest arenas of the world.”
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also extended his congratulations, expressing hope for further achievements by Iranian athletes on the global stage.
