Repatriation ceremony pays final respects to war pilot in Kobrin

BREST, 13 December (BelTA) – A repatriation ceremony to pay final respects to pilot of the Great Patriotic War Piotr Shmygov was held in Korbrin on 11 December.

On 17 September, members of the historical-patriotic search unit Aviapoisk-Brest unearthed parts of a bomber between the villages of Polyatichi and Batchi and found the mummified remains of Piotr Shmygov. Junior Sergeant Piotr Shmygov served in the 140th Bomber Aviation Regiment, which in the first days of the war was based at the airfield near Orsha.

The pilot went on his last flight on 24 June 1941. For 80 years, the pilot was considered as missing.

Maksim Kuchmin, the great-nephew of the pilot, and the head of the Velikodvorsky village administration Yuri Ukhvatkin came to Korin to return Piotr Shmygin to his native land for burial. The remains of the defender will be buried with full honors in the village of Velikodvorsky, Gus-Khrustalny District, Vladimir Oblast of Russia, on 13 December.
