MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) - The 28th plenary meeting of the Coordinating Council on Trans-Siberian Transportation will be held in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan on 19-20 September. Belarus will be represented by head of Belarusian Railways Vladimir Morozov, BelTA learned from the press center of Belarusian rail administration.
The meeting will focus on the prospects for the development of the transport corridor, the measures to improve the efficiency of container transport in the face of global competition. Representatives of ministries and departments, rail operators, shipping companies of CIS countries, Europe and Asia, seaports and organizations involved in rail and sea transport have been invited to take part in the discussion. All in all, the meeting will be attended by more than 250 delegates from 30 countries .
Traditionally, the event will be joined by the most influential international transport organizations: the European Economic Commission of the United Nations (UNECE), the UN ESCAP, the Organization for Cooperation of Railways (OSJD), the International Union of Railways (UIC), the International Rail Transport Committee (CIT) and the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA).
The council will set the objectives for the next year in terms of improving the competitiveness of the trans-Siberian route, developing information technology on transport and harmonizing international transport law.
The press center noted that Belarusian Railways is the link between the Trans-Siberian Railway Network and the railway networks of Eastern and Western Europe. Today, Belarusian Railways is part of the Asia-Europe-Asia route which uses the Trans-Siberian Railway Network (through Zabakailsk and Mongolia) and the Trans-Asian route (through Dostyk and Altynkol and further via Kazakhstan).
Much attention is paid to container transportation. In January-August 2019, 459,500 TEU containers were transported, or up 18.2% year-on-year.
The rail terminal economy across the Belarusian-Polish border crossings has been gaining momentum. The volume of container shipments in January-August 2019 on the East-West-East route amounted to 292,900 TEU containers, or up 11.2% year-on-year. The container terminal on the Brest-Severny station has been renovated to increase the processing capacity of the Brest railway junction and to accelerate passage of container trains on the East-West-East route. Its average daily processing capacity for overloading containers has been increased by 1.5 times, the container storage area expanded twice.
The development of export traffic to China is of particular importance for Belarusian Railways. In January-August 2019, the volume of container traffic along Belaursian Railway on China- Europe-China route amounted to 207,700 TEU containers, or up 4.7% year-on-yearMore about Economy
