Potential for Belarus-Ethiopia economic cooperation seen as underutilized

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) - The potential for trade and economic cooperation between Belarus and Ethiopia is far from being exhausted, Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BelCCI) Denis Meleshkin said during a meeting between Belarusian business and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Russia and concurrently to Belarus Cham Ugala Uriat, BelTA has learned.

Belarus and Ethiopia maintain good diplomatic relations, Denis Meleshkin noted. "We expect that these friendly diplomatic relations will help drive forward trade relations. The trade between our countries is growing at a good pace, but the potential that both Ethiopia and the Republic of Belarus have is far from being exhausted," he stressed. “Belarusian business has shown a great interest in today's event. About 50 companies signed in. They represent various industries: exchange trade, medical services, education, tourism services, agricultural mechanical engineering, meat and dairy, industrial products. We hope that today's event will help Belarusian business learn more about the terms of trade in Ethiopia, which will help increase our country's exports."

Ethiopia is also interested in cooperation with the Republic of Belarus in many areas, Ambassador Cham Ugala Uriat said. "Political relations between our countries are at a very high level. I hope that trade and economic relations between the countries will catch up. Ethiopia, as an agrarian country, is interested in agricultural engineering products. In turn, we are ready to offer the products that may be of interest to the consumers in Belarus," the ambassador said.

The Ethiopian government is currently implementing a large-scale project to modernize the economy, including the agricultural industry. "In this regard, Ethiopia is very interested in exports from Belarus and hopes that bilateral relations will gain momentum. Belarus is known for its high-quality agricultural engineering products," the diplomat said.

Ethiopia is a leader in coffee production, and can also offer Belarus flowers, a number of agricultural products, materials for footwear manufacturers, etc.
