Minister: Work is underway on Belarus’ social and economic development program

MINSK, 15 May (BelTA) - Work is currently underway to develop the program of social and economic development of the country, Belarusian Economy Minister Yuri Chebotar said at the international conference "Economy of Belarus: Growth, Innovation, Security," at the Belarusian State University of Economics, BelTA learned.

"The potential for economic growth is very important to us. We have been discussing it since last year as part of the start of our new program cycle. We have already prepared the National Sustainable Development Strategy, and the work on the social and economic development program is in the active phase. Security is also very important to us. We see the turbulence all over the world. Recently, the World Bank, IMF updated the world economy outlook, lowering it, including that of Russia, our key market. These are certain challenges for us, which we need to take into account when drafting our sustainable development documents. For the last three years, we have grown at a rate higher than the world rates, and this year we have set such a goal," Yuri Chebotar said.

Dmitry Matusevich, Deputy Head of the Belarus President Administration, said: "An important cycle is beginning. We have a new government, a new economic team. This year marks very diverse challenges. Even the current weather is also a challenge for our agriculture in the literal sense. But life does not stand still, we see positive trends, including on the external circuit. There are changes in both directions.”
Sergey Glazyev, State Secretary of the Union State, was the guest of honor at the event. He began his speech by outlining the results of the theory of long-term economic development as a process of changing technological and global economic patterns.

"This theory is a working tool on the basis of which we give fairly accurate forecasts of the development of the world economy and our capabilities within the framework of the ongoing structural changes. It is no secret for economists that the IMF and World Bank forecasts are now very inaccurate. They have not been confirmed for the last 15 years, and rating agencies are incorrectly assessing credit risks. The large-scale structural shifts that are taking place in the world before our eyes are not captured by standard economic theories, hence the erroneous forecasts. The Eurasian Commission, where I worked for almost five years, refused to use the IMF and World Bank forecasts as inaccurate and theoretically untenable," he informed.

The conference was attended by representatives of higher education institutions, research institutes of Belarus, and representatives of Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and China.
