Cooperation with China seen as instrumental to Belarus’ technological modernization

MINSK, 22 October (BelTA) – Cooperation with China will enable Belarus to implement ambitious plans for modernization and technological upgrading, First Deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Snopkov said at a joint sitting of the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus in Minsk on 22 October, BelTA has learned.

"China is the second significant vector of industrial development and innovativeness after Russia. Its technological leadership will allow us to implement the most ambitious plans for modernization and technological upgrade, including those within the framework of the Union State. For this purpose, the Industry Ministries of Belarus and China have signed a comprehensive strategy of joint industrial development and a detailed plan of projects to develop this strategy," Nikolai Snopkov said.

Belarus has outlined specific investment projects and promising areas for projects in mechanical and automotive engineering, microelectronics, petrochemicals, woodworking, and others. "Transmissions, engines, mobile cranes, passenger cars, supercapacitors for electric buses – this is a list of goods already produced in Belarus with the participation of Chinese partners and using Chinese technologies. These products effectively complement the Belarusian industrial potential," he stated.

According to him, a number of Chinese developments are being introduced and tested to produce individual units of Belarusian machinery. A lot of projects are in the pipeline, in particular, 15 new major technological projects worth up to $3 billion. They include, for example, construction of bleached pulp and board plants, modern automated foundry, production of engines, polypropylene, carbamide, hydrogen peroxide, sodium carbonate.

"We are continuing to work on the president's instruction to create our own passenger car. This year we started the licensed production of the BelGEE. Belarus bought a license, which allows to ensure 100% localization of these cars. This will help us to design our own models in the future," Nikolai Snopkov said.

During the visit of Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Li Qiang to Belarus in August 2024, the countries launched the Years of Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation. "The current strategic industrial partnership is based on enhancing industrial cooperation by using new high technologies," the first deputy prime minister concluded.
