Belstat: No gender pay gap in Belarus

MINSK, 21 August (BelTA) - There are no differences in wages based on the employee’s gender in Belarus, Head of the Main Labor Statistics Department of the Belarusian National Statistical Committee (Belstat) Irina Bondarenko said at a press conference, BelTA learned.

Belstat carried out an experimental calculation of the adjusted gender pay gap. “That means we compared wages within groups of employees with the same profession, education, and work experience, thereby eliminating the influence of these factors on pay. This calculation confirmed that there are no gender-based differences in wages in the Republic of Belarus,” Irina Bondarenko said.

She stressed that an analysis of the gender structure of employment shows that traditionally female-dominated sectors are healthcare and education, where women make up 84% of the workforce. Slightly fewer women work in financial and insurance activities – 77%. In trade and in accommodation and food services women account for 66%.

Women’s employment is growing in traditionally male-dominated fields. “Previously, the share of women in the IT sector was low. Today, one in three software developers and analysts is a woman. Among database professionals, women account for nearly half,” Irina Bondarenko noted.

Interestingly, according to her, the number of women in blue-collar jobs is also increasing. “Whereas in the past about 5% of operators, machinists, and adjusters were women, today this figure is 10-12%,” she noted.

To ensure comprehensive monitoring of gender equality in the country, the Belstat official website hosts the gender statistics information system: an open web portal containing up‑to‑date official statistical information and administrative data on gender issues, accessible to all categories of users.
