BelNPP generates over 48bn kWh of electricity since launch

MINSK, 1 August (BelTA) - The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) has generated over 48 billion kWh of electricity since launch, Belarusian Energy Minister Denis Moroz said during a meeting with the staff of the Belarusian State District Power Plant (BelGRES), a branch of the Vitebskenergo company, BelTA learned from the press service of the Energy Ministry of Belarus.

"In Belarus, 100% of the population has access to electricity. This is a unique achievement. Not all countries provide such an opportunity," Denis Moroz emphasized. The energy minister described the construction of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) as the industry's most powerful project. “Today, it is an undeniably successful, stable, and, most importantly, safe operational project. BelNPP generates roughly 40% of the electricity consumed in the national grid,” he said.

Since its commissioning, the plant has already generated over 48 billion kWh of electricity, replacing more than 12.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The project has served as a strong catalyst for the development of related high-tech industries, including: nuclear medicine, metallurgy and additive manufacturing, energy storage systems, IT, particularly big data processing, resource-intensive AI applications, supercomputing operations.

In the context of power grid modernization, Denis Moroz highlighted that over 1,000km of electrical lines and more than 83km of district heating networks were commissioned in the first half of 2025 demonstrating significant progress in infrastructure development. Looking ahead, the plans for 2025 include the construction and modernization of approximately 3,500km of electrical grids, over 240km of heating networks. These efforts represent a critical step toward achieving Belarus’ strategic energy goals, enhancing system reliability and efficiency.

The minister emphasized that this task represents a complex yet solvable challenge, one that the ministry has been successfully addressing. Over the past three to four years, Belarus has significantly expanded its production capacity for infrastructure modernization, enabling a twofold increase in power grid reconstruction volumes. The country has set an ambitious target: to reach an annual reconstruction rate of approximately 5,000km of power grids by the end of the next five-year plan. This expansion is critical to meeting the growing needs of both households and the economy.

In the first half of 2025, household electricity consumption for heating and hot water supply reached 723.4 million kWh, a 30% increase year-on-year.

The minister toured the Belarusian State District Power Plant (BelGRES), inspecting operations at the central control panel and boiler unit control system.

BelGRES is the “firstborn” of Belarus' energy system, commissioned in 1930. Current workforce stands at 324 employees.
