Belarus, Uzbekistan discuss development of industrial cooperation, logistics

MINSK, 29 June (BelTA) – Experts from Belarus and Uzbekistan have discussed the development of industrial cooperation and logistics between the two countries, BelTA has learned.

A round table discussion titled “Belarus and Uzbekistan: New Vectors of Interaction” was held at the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research (BISR) with participation from experts of both states. BISR analyst Anton Dudarenok noted that the meeting was part of preparations for the upcoming visit of Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Belarus. “We discussed three areas of cooperation: industrial and agro-industrial, logistics, and new technologies,” he emphasized.

He recalled that a Belarus-Uzbekistan joint tractor assembly plant is already operating in Tashkent. The two countries also share mutual interests in food security and agrotechnology cooperation. “There is very close interaction in education as well. The number of Uzbek students studying in Belarus has grown significantly since 2017. All this shows that our relations have a future and our economies complement each other,” the analyst said.

Bekzod Kurbanov, head of a sector at the Strategic Reforms Agency under the president of Uzbekistan, pointed out that Belarus has a highly developed agricultural industry. “Belarus also has notable achievements in medicine and pharmaceuticals. Uzbekistan has a large domestic market, a niche Belarusian producers could occupy. In addition, we are building strong cooperation within Central Asia. Major regional projects can be implemented on Uzbekistan’s platform,” he noted.

The event was attended by Belarus’ Economy Minister Yuri Chebotar and Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Belarus Rakhmatulla Nazarov. “Relations between Belarus and Uzbekistan are developing very dynamically. Cooperation covers almost all spheres. One of the most important areas is the economy. There are no political problems between our countries,” the ambassador stressed.

As an example of this dynamic development, he cited the growth of bilateral trade: “If in 2018 trade was around $200 million, last year it reached about $1 billion. And this is not the limit,” the diplomat summarized.

As BelTA reported earlier, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to Minsk is scheduled for 8-9 July.
