Belarus, Russia’s Yaroslavl Oblast to focus on seeds, biotechnology, digitalization in agriculture

MINSK, 24 November (BelTA) - Belarus and Russia’s Yaroslavl Oblast plan to cooperate in seed production, agricultural processing, biotechnology, and digitalization of the agricultural sector, the press service of the Agriculture and Food Ministry told BelTA following a meeting between Belarusian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Aleksandr Yakovchits and Minister of Agro-Industrial Complex and Consumer Market of Yaroslavl Oblast Yevgeny Tikhonov.

Aleksandr Yakovchits emphasized the importance of enhancing economic interaction. “Belarus is a major exporter of food products and agricultural machinery to the Russian market,” he noted. “However, our partnership had a great room for growth. It is important to maintain the current momentum and systemically intensify cooperation, particularly in such promising areas as seed production, processing, biotechnology, and digitalization of the agricultural sector.”

One of the topics discussed during the talks was flax cultivation. The parties exchanged experiences in the cultivation and processing of flax, focusing on the potential supply of high-quality seeds of Belarusian flax varieties and other agricultural crops.

Consideration was also given to the dairy industry: the Belarusian side proposed considering the supply of bacterial concentrates and starter cultures for dairy production.

Among the priorities are mutual supplies of vegetables, which will diversify the choice and provide consumers with fresh, high-quality vegetables throughout the year.

The discussion on the use of Belarusian software designed for the automation of livestock complex management also sparked interest.

Yevgeny Tikhonov noted that agriculture is an industry where there should not be fierce competition. “We are interested in exchanging technologies and products to expand further cooperation and ensure sustainable development,” he said.

The meeting participants agreed to continue work at the expert level and prepare specific proposals for the discussed initiatives.
