Mirnyi, Bury claim berths in Rio 2016

MINSK, 1 July (BelTA) – The Belarusian tennis duo of Max Mirnyi and Alexander Bury will take part in the men's doubles event of the Summer Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Tennis Federation.

Max Mirnyi and Alexander Bury will take part in the tournament in line with the requirements of the International Tennis Federation to distribute the final qualifying spots. It will be the fifth Olympics for Max Mirnyi who turns 39 on 6 July. Alexander Bury, 28, will debut at the Olympic Games in Rio. Max Mirnyi and Alexander Bury are currently playing at the Wimbledon, teamed up with different partners.

Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka claimed the Olympic champion titles in the 2012 London mixed competitions. Apart from that, Victoria Azarenka won bronze in the women's singles event of the 2012 London Games. At the forthcoming Olympic Games in Rio the Belarusian athlete will appear in the women's singles event only. Victoria Azarenka had to withdraw from the 2016 Wimbledon with a knee injury. The athlete is currently doing her best to fully recover ahead of the Olympic Games. The tennis tournament in Rio is due to take place on 6-14 August.
