MINSK, 6 May (BelTA) – Belarus lost to Finland 2-3 in their first match of the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Paris on 5 May, BelTA has learned.
With Finland taking a two-goal advantage early in the opening period, Belarus coach Dave Lewis had to call a timeout to regroup.
Yegor Sharangovich replied for Belarus late in the second period to narrow the gap. Yevgeny Kovyrshin tied the game up at 4:32 of the third period.
After Veli-Matti Savinainen scored a power-play goal in the 50th minute, Belarus pressed for the equalizer, but could not capitalize despite getting two man advantages and pulling Kevin Lalande for the extra attacker with 1:48 left.
Belarus will next play the Czech Republic on 6 May.
