MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – Alla Tsuper (freestyle skiing) will carry the flag for Team Belarus at the opening ceremony of the 23rd Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Olympic Committee.
Olympic champion 2014 Alla Tsuper was elected flag-bearer at the general meeting of the Belarusian athletes in PyeongChang.
According to chief of the mission of Team Belarus Alexander Baraulya, the candidature of Alla Tsuper was most suitable. “The competitions in biathlon, cross-country, short track and speed skating will begin on 10 February. Our goal was not to disrupt the training schedule of the athletes for the most important tournament. Besides it is usually an experienced, famous and recognizable athlete who is chosen to bear the flag for the national Olympic team. Alla Tsuper is exactly such an athlete. She is also among Belarus' medal hopefuls in in PyeongChang. Therefore, it was decided to entrust this mission to Alla Tsuper. In our view, it is a good choice,” Alexander Baraulya said.
The flag for Team Blearus at the Olympics was carried by the famous athletes. At the Winter Games 2010 in Vancouver, this role was assigned to Oleg Antonenko (ice hockey). It was Max Mirnyi (tennis) at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Alexei Grishin (freestyle skiing) at the games in Sochi and Vasil Kiryienka (cycling) four years later at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
